About Tunkhannock Creek Natural Area

Tunkhannock Creek Natural Area, located within the Tiadaghton State Forest in northeastern Pennsylvania, safeguards approximately 1,400 acres of primarily old-growth hardwood forest along the Tunkhannock Creek and its tributaries. This natural area protects a remote and rugged valley that features steep slopes, cascades, and a diverse riparian ecosystem that supports various plant and animal species uncommon to the region. The forest consists dominantly of hemlock, yellow birch, sugar maple, and other mature hardwoods that create a cool and shaded environment, ideal for species like brook trout in the creek and black bears in the forest. Established in 1982 to preserve this ecological treasure, the area retains a wilderness-like atmosphere due to its limited development and relatively low visitation. Hiking opportunities focus on a series of challenging trails that wind through dense woods and alongside the creek, including several notable cascades and scenic overlooks. Visitors appreciate the natural quiet and opportunities for birdwatching and photography. Although primitive in facilities, the area offers access points for anglers targeting native trout and for backpackers wanting remote camping experiences. Locations near Montoursville make the area accessible but still feel remote. The Tunkhannock Creek Natural Area appeals to adventurers seeking a peaceful forest experience within Pennsylvania’s varied landscape.
